Why Restorative Yoga?

In a post-pandemic world, it’s evident that our nervous systems have been affected by the impacts it had on our lives. When anxiety manifests in our lives from various reasons our body is doing it’s best to keep us functional - but at what cost?

Our daily mindset, ability to make decisions, eating habits, stress management, and physical abilities are just some of the actions that depend on our nervous system.

Restorative yoga is a style of yoga that focuses on relaxation and rest, and when we are in resting state (PNS), is when the healing can begin to happen. Luckily, it is a gentle and nurturing practice that is designed to calm the mind and relax the body. It does this by specific poses and breathing techniques that work with the central nervous system.

Restorative yoga typically involves the use of props, such as blankets, blocks, and bolsters, to support the body in passive, restful poses. These poses are typically held for longer periods of time, often five to ten minutes, with the intention of allowing the body and mind to fully relax and let go. It varies from student to student on the time it takes for ones body to slip in to this state and feel the results.

Restorative Yoga for Your Health

It is evident that practicing restorative yoga is often successful for people who are dealing with stress, anxiety, or physical discomfort. In our Restorative Yoga Teacher Training program you will be given the education and opportunities to start your journey as a Restorative Yoga Teacher. The ability to retain information and remember the education can also be dependent on the state of our nervous system during the classes. We aim to cultivate that restful state as we educate which results in a deeper retention of the information, as opposed to learning in a state when our nervous system is excited and aroused. Calming the nervous system into its parasympathetic state will show you a level of peace and rest that may not have been reached in recent years. The rest and renewal comes from steeping in the state of our parasympathetic nervous system. In contrast to the fight or flight state, which is where our more activated and functional behaviors come from, known as the sympathetic nervous system.

In this Restorative Yoga Training (25h), you will learn:

  • The origins of Restorative Yoga and how it expanded

  • The principles and philosophy of restorative yoga, including the concept of relaxation and rest.

  • The value of restoring our nervous system to a healing state

  • Fascial theory + anatomy

  • The science of the nervous system

  • Myofascial self-release

  • Sequencing + blending with Yoga Nidra

  • Therapeutic alignment + adjustments
